Hors-les-murs | Poulenc and Debussy String Sonatas | Maison du Japon

The concert “Poulenc and Debussy String Sonatas” is part of the Harriet Hale Woolley Fellowship Project, in collaboration with the House of Japan. The latter welcomes you to their magnificent Grand Salon where musicians Ian Tomaz, Andrews Gibbs and Konami Tadokoro will take us on a journey through the works of two great composers: Poulenc and Debussy.

Meet the Artists

Praised as “an artist with an already expanding reputation and a great future” (The Well-Tempered Ear); cellist Andrew Briggs recently performed at the Festival Radio France Montpellier, Bridging Arts Music Festival (Nürmberg, DL); with recitals at the Concerts Rue Bayard and at the Maison du Japon in Paris. Last season, Andrew performed with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchester National d’Ile de France, the Ensemble Caliopée (Paris, FR), and as principal cello of the Orchester Symphonique de Bretagne (Rennes, FR). After studying at Juilliard, Andrew moved to Paris as a recipient of the Harriet Hale Woolley Fellowship from the Fondation des États-Unis where he studied and performed works by Duport, Debussy and Poulenc. He then joined the Cité Internationale des Arts where he spent two years working on projects showcasing Beethoven’s cello works and world music with the Kimya Ensemble. He was a founding member of the IMAGO ensemble in residence at the Fondation des Etats-Unis, creating musical performances featuring interdisciplinary artistic collaborations.

Ian Tomaz is an American pianist currently based in Paris, France. He has studied at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot since 2021, working with Pascal Roge. He is in residence at the Fondation des Etats Unis in 2022-2023 as a Harriet Hale Woolley Scholar, performing concerts as an Artist in Residence at the FEU and around Paris while working on the major solo, chamber and art song compositions of Francis Poulenc. Since moving to Paris, he has performed at Salle Cortot, Musee J.J. Henner and the Centre Culturel Czech and was also chosen as a full scholarship participant for the Academie de Musique Francaise, playing for renowned French pianists including Michel Beroff, Jacques Rouvier, Anne Queffelec, Marie Catherine Girod and Francoise Thinat. He began his studies at the ENMP thanks to the generous support of the Bourse Marandon from the Societe des Professeurs de Français et Francophones D’Amérique in New York.

Konami Tadokoro, violinist, was born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1998. After graduating the Toho-Gakuen University of Music she began studies at Ecole Normale de Musique thanks to a scholarship from the Kyoto Academy. In 2021, she received the Diplôme Superieur d’Exécution avec mention très bien avec félicitations du jury, the top prize given at the school. She has given multiple recitals in France, including at Musee national Jean-Jacques Henner, Centre tcheque and the Salle Cortot.
