Politiques du corps brings together works by Fondation des États-Unis artists-in-residence Giselle Hobbs, Kenza Ka, and Joëlle Antonia Santiago. Their works reflect on the relationship(s) between bodies, identity, territory, and cultural upbringings–ranging from the impact of religious traditions on girlhood where communion dresses become protective armor, to decolonial issues between the West and West Africa, to Indigenous cosmic narratives and ancestral spirits present in the universe long after bodies have been returned to the earth.
Giselle Hobbs creates illusionistic paintings that search for ancestral shapes in nebulae, drawing from cosmologies and origin stories present in her upbringing.
Kenza Ka offers textile artefacts with different levels of interpretation (critical, pride and reconciliation objects), to awaken us to systemic issues inherited from Western colonization.
Joëlle Antonia Santiago. creates performance work that considers the impact of ideology on the body.
Together, the show considers the transformation and coalescence of cultural, corporeal, and political identities that are often overlooked or otherized.
