The second resident musician to perform in our Printempo concert series is Lusi Xie, a pianist from Shenzhen, China. She invites you on a journey through three distinct artistic periods : Baroque, Romantic and Modern.
I remember how I felt when I listened to music before learning the piano. I have never tried to impose an interpretation on music. My intention is to respect its presence I feel it, it comforts me and music enriches me.
I have chosen to play Bach for the Baroque Period, Haydn for the Classical Period, Schumann for the Romantic Period and Poulenc for the Modern Period.
Bach is the father of western music. He created unique techniques of composition. For example, the Fugue, which consists of themes and responses, always has four intervals between one and the other.
Haydn, on the other hand, is a classical composer who took over some of the techniques of the Baroque Period, while breaking some rules. I will be playing one of his sonatas, a type of structure created in this period.
In the Romantic Period, composers begin to break the harmonics and some techniques of the Classical Period. They explore new composition techniques. The Novelette is a tale, which depicts Schumann’s love for Clara. Today, we say that Schuman was bipolar; his pieces are rich in emotion, imagination…
Finally, we will arrive in the Modern Period. Here to, the composers break the Classical and romantic harmonies. The first Novelette of Poulenc is like the morning. In the second one, he finds a sound resembling people who speak very quickly and in parentheses like in 1930’s, Paris. One also hears a sound like the chattering of the salesmen on the markets, or of the acrobatic troops of that time. Finally, the third Novelette uses a Spanish theme, the Falla theme.
I invite you to let the music take you on a journey through the ages.
