The FEU is pleased to welcome Really Spicy Opera with their new concert Jewels from the Aria Institute: New Opera in English. This thrilling live concert program showcases brand-new opera arias, duets, and trios written by American and Francophone writers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn about the world of new opera development, and travel down the rabbit hole into the world of gardening nightmares, the best revenge, comedic misunderstanding, misadventures in love, and more!
The evening is hosted by the critically acclaimed singers Tess Altiveros (Seattle, Washington) and Anne Wieben (Vienna, Austria), in conjunction with pianists Basil Considine and Lindsey Huff Breitschaedel, and the singer and Fulbright scholar Dr. Bree Nichols.

About the Company
Really Spicy Opera is an award-winning chamber opera company located in Minneapolis, Minnesota (USA). Founded in 2005, the company has given the world premieres of more than thirty plays, musicals, and operas, and launched the careers of more than 150 professional musicians. RSO toured across the United States and Canada in 2017 and 2018, earning “Best of Festival” and other awards, and performances from its Women in Opera Project have been featured at several academic conferences. RSO’s Aria Institute for Composers and Librettists is one of only three intensive opera-writing training programs in the United States.
About the Artists
Tess Altiveros (soprano) is a critically acclaimed, Seattle-based opera singer with a specialty in bringing new works to life. Her performance credits include numerous roles with Eugene Opera, Opera Memphis, Seattle Opera, Skylark Opera Theatre, the Vancouver Bach Festival, and more. She is a faculy member at Seattle University and a co-director of Really Spicy Opera’s Aria Institute.
Basil Considine (artistic director) is a musicologist and interpreter of new and historic operas. He is a recipient of the American Musicological Society’s Janet Levy Award, the Society for American Music’s Digital Lectures in American Music Award, and was a fellow at the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in 2019. He is a co-director of Really Spicy Opera’s Aria Institute.
Anne Wieben (soprano) is an award-winning, Vienna-based opera singer with a highly praised stage presence and vocal fireworks. Her recent performance credits include Musiktheater Vorarlberg, Oper Rund Um, the Salzburger Festpiele, and the Wir Sind Wien festival. She is the founder and creative director of Minnesota’s Opera on the Lake festival and a co-director of Really Spicy Opera’s Aria Institute.
Lindsey Huff Breitschaedel (piano) is an American expat singer and pianist whose career straddles both sides of the Atlantic, running from the western reaches of California to Austria and Central Europe.
Bree Nichols (soprano) is a singer-scholar praised for her “rich vocal disposition” (KlasikaPlus) and compelling stage presence. She is currently a Fulbright grantee to the Czech Republic, where she is creating the world premiere recordings of Czech songs.
