To begin the 2023 edition of Printempo, Isabelle Pazar invites you to discover works by Poulenc, Dutilleux and Bolling. As a recipient of the 2022-2023 Fulbright Research Award, Isabelle Pazar is studying the historical development and unique pedagogical methods, performance style, and technique of the “French flute school” under the guidance of flute player and educator Patricia Nagle. Numerous works for the Boehm flute have been composed for the annual Concours de Prix held at the Paris Conservatory.
Understanding the French culture in which her pieces were composed is essential to share that unique tradition of sound and phrase color that are important elements in the performance of these French works. Isabelle is working on creating a technical book with practical advice, including her training on the works of the Concours de Prix and various flute works described by French composers, and will pass on this knowledge of the French tradition of flute technique and pedagogy to others through instruction, performances, lecture recitals, and flute publications.

Isabelle Pazar is a Fulbright Research Scholar currently in residence at the U.S. Foundation to study flute pedagogy and traditional techniques of the French flute school. For her research project, Isabelle joined the École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot and studied with flutist Patricia Nagle. Originally from the United States, particularly Maine, Isabelle is a doctoral candidate in music performance at Stony Brook University in New York, where she had the opportunity to study with renowned flutist Carol Wincenc. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston College after studying with Assistant Flute Professor Judy Grant, creator and director of the Boston Flute Academy. In 2017, she received a scholarship from Boston College to attend the Cremona Italy International Music Festival and Competition. Isabelle earned a master’s degree in music performance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2020, where she studied flute with Dr. Cobus du Toit and worked as an assistant studio flute teacher. She also helped teach music history. She has also studied with flutist Sooyun Kim of the renowned Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society in New York City, and has performed in several MasterClasses for flutists Leone Buyse, Elizabeth Rowe, Mario Caroli, Linda Toote, and Lorne McGhee. Isabelle’s love of music composition and particularly the Romantic era brought her to Paris to study the flute in her native land. A recipient of the Harriet Hale Woolley Fellowship for the year 2023-2024, Isabelle is excited to continue her studies here in Paris as an artist-in-residence at the United States Foundation.
Ian Tomaz is an American pianist currently based in Paris, France. He is a 2021 student at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot, where he studies with Pascal Roge. He is spending the 2022-2023 year as a Harriet Hale Woolley Fellow at the United States Foundation, giving concerts as an artist-in-residence at FEU and in the Paris region while working on the great solo, chamber, and chanson savante compositions of Francis Poulenc. Since moving to Paris, he has given concerts at the Salle Cortot, the J.J. Henner Museum and the Czech Cultural Center and has also been chosen as a full scholarship holder for the French Academy of Music, playing for such renowned French pianists as Michel Beroff, Jacques Rouvier, Anne Queffelec, Marie Catherine Girod and Françoise Thinat. He began his studies at ENMP with the generous support of the Marandon Fellowship from french professor and french-speaking american professors.

Kyo Kawasaki is a laureate of the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris. His admission to the Jaroussky Academy in 2018 launched his career as a young soloist and propelled him to the forefront of the national and international scene.
