I. Howell and S. Fujita presents: Monkey Wrench and Banana Bread is a solo show by Japanese-American artist Isaac Howell. During his time in Paris, Howell, who has been awarded with the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship and is a current resident at the Fondation des États-Unis, has spent time researching into the careers of people like Guy Debord, Constant Nieuwenhuys, and Yona Friendman, as well as groups like the Situationist International and Provo, who focus on issues of urbanism, infrastructure, and social transformation; their work envisioned urban development that privileged socialization, and the citizen’s spontaneous ability to adapt the city and its architecture to their needs. Howell is interested in speculative architecture and visions of utopian urbanism. He will be showing eight new paintings made in response to critical literature written by artists and theorists like the ones mentioned above.
