For Fête de la musique, the collective Lovemusic is pleased to invite you to discover Mouthpiece. Singer and American composer, Erin Gee explores non-verbal communication using the voice as an open-ended instrument of sound production rather than a vehicle for identity. Lovemusic offers the latest addition to her cycle of pieces mouthpiece, Mouthpiece 37, commissioned by the collective, in a program that celebrates the American new music scene.
Lovemusic have invited Sarah Grace Graves, FEU resident and Harriet Hale Woolley scholar, to perform this experimental work for voice.

About the Artists
The Strasbourg-based collective lovemusic takes it’s name from the homonymous work by Betsy Jolas. This piece was the starting point for a collaboration between the flutist Emiliano Gavito and clarinetist Adam Starkie who went on to found the collective lovemusic based on the ethos of this piece : dialogue, sharing and transmission. lovemusic is currently composed of nine musicians of different origins and influences (flute, clarinet, oboe, violin/viola, cello, accordion, percussion, guitar and voice) all with a shared love, interest and commitment to the music and culture of our times. lovemusic aims to develop and present new programmes that are not limited by a genre or formation, but instead explore aesthetic concepts and creative ideas in order to produce an alternative and coherent discourse. A shared passion for collaborative projects with today’s composers completes their programmes, offering an original perspective of the present day…
Lovemusic are always eager to (re) discover the interpretative possibilities of their instruments and especially to explore their interactions with the new technologies and different techniques of scenic performance. The physical commitment, choice of repertoire and collaborations, and the creativity in their programming are central to the collective’s approach. Since 2018 lovemusic curate a 5-concert cycle each year at the BNU in Strasbourg for which they have commissioned over 15 new works and have invited many composers to come and collaborate with them. lovemusic have exported this new repertoire throughout the world with concerts in Italy, Germany, Portugal, UK, Spain, Mexico and Japan. Presented in a visually and physically engaged way, lovemusic’s performances aim to offer to the public music which we don’t have to categorise as “contemporary” and all the prejudices that this entails. The collective aims to provide a new perspective on new music.
Sarah Grace Graves is a composer and singer of experimental music living in Paris. Her music contextualizes the voice and instrument within the internal landscape of the performer: emotions, physical sensations, and sense memory. In March 2021, her experimental vocal recital Songs from the Chalet was released as part of Divertimento Ensemble’s Young Performers on Digital Stage concert series. In it, Graves performs her own compositions as well as selections from Erin Gee’s Mouthpiece series and Giacinto Scelsi’s Canti del Capricorno. She has participated in numerous festivals including Voix Nouvelles Academy at Royaumont, Northwestern University New Music Conference, Westben Performer-Composer Residency, IlSuono Contemporary Music Week, Nief-Norf Summer Festival, and Estalagem da Ponta do Sol Residency for contemporary music and electronics. She performs Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Stimmung with the Italian contemporary vocal ensemble Fragmente and is a founding member of Mockingbird and Magpie, an experimental voice/cello duo with Toronto composer and cellist Cory Harper-Latkovich. Sarah Grace holds a Master of Arts in composition from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Music in composition from Rice University. From 2021-2022, Sarah Grace will be a Harriet Hale Woolley Fellow at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris. She is studying voice with Nicholas Isherwood.
