Mocha Jean Herrup brings a filmmaker’s eye and a queer deconstructive lens to an exhibit of photographs that redefines the frame of Israel/Palestine. “Act of Seeing” is about seeing (not seeing) Israel/Palestine, how vision itself works to normalize race, boundary demarcations, land use, and whose “bodies come to matter.” Herrup met with filmmakers, educators, artists, and activists in occupied Ramallah and Bil’in and across the green line in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other places inside the “48.” Pictures from the experience are arranged into seamless pairings whose juxtapositions evoke connection, exclusion, and tragic absurdity. Images are printed as large format digital photography and installed to look like winding film strips, with narrative reporting and little maps that show where each picture was taken, often shockingly close.
About the Artist
Mocha Jean Herrup is an award winning filmmaker and co-founder of the Peace & Conflict Studies Program at the Austin Community College. They will be an artist-in-residence in the Interdisciplinary Arts program at the University of Washington at Bothell in the fall. Herrup’s work has been screened on The Sundance Channel, Northwest Airlines, at The Walker Art Center, SXSW, and in festivals around the world. Their current film project, created in community in Seattle, is called “31 Short Lectures about Taylor Swift.” See some of her work on Vimeo.
